5 Press Gallery’s Arts Classes For Adults: Papier-Mâché Mask-Making & Experimental Film

5 Press Gallery’s Arts Classes For Adults: Papier-Mâché Mask-Making & Experimental Film

The NOCCA Institute and 5 Press Gallery are excited to announce three great autumn workshops taught by talented NOCCA Visual Arts alumni.

Miro Hoffman, an artist-in-residence at the Joan Mitchell Center, will lead short and in-depth classes in experimental filmmaking, while Jacob Reptile helps everyone get into the Halloween spirit with a workshop in mask-making that employs a simpler, easier version of papier-mâché than most of us know.

CLASS #1: Light Painting, taught by Miro Hoffmann
Sunday, September 27, 1pm to 6pm

One-day workshop in 5 Press Gallery (5 Press Street, New Orleans)
$35: CLICK HERE TO REGISTER

In this workshop, participants will work in ‘direct cinema’ painting on clear 16mm leader film to create abstract two-dimensional compositions in light. At the end of the workshop, films that are finished will be screened on a film projector in the gallery. No experience in film or painting is required.

CLASS #2: Halloween Papier-Mâché Mask Workshop, taught by Jacob Reptile
Saturday, October 17, 12pm-5pm

Taught in Press Street Gardens (7 Press Street, between Dauphine & Burgundy), weather permitting
$30: CLICK HERE TO REGISTER

In this workshop, participants will learn to use contact cement to start and finish a papier-mâché mask in five hours. This method allows for quick building because of its short drying time, and the end result is much lighter than traditional flour and water methods.

This is a beginner’s class, and artists and enthusiasts of all skill levels are invited. Construction materials will be provided, but each participant should bring paint and materials for decorating her mask, as well as a pair of scissors and a box-cutter. Attendees will be able to bring home their masks at the end of the day.

CLASS #3: Light Painting, taught by Miro Hoffmann
Saturday and/or Sunday, November 21-22, 1pm to 6pm

One or two-day workshop
$35 for one day (Saturday or Sunday), or $45 for both days: CLICK HERE TO REGISTER

For those who take the one-day curriculum, this will be nearly identical to the one-day class described above. However, those who sign up for both days will be able to experiment with different materials, as well as processes with longer drying time.

To register for any of these workshops, visit 5PressGallery.Eventbrite.com. Questions can be addressed to 5 Press Gallery’s director, Amanda Cassingham-Bardwell, at acassingham@noccainstitute.com or 504 254 5624.

Like Press Street Station, Press Street Gardens, The Boxcar food truck, and other NOCCA Institute projects, proceeds from 5 Press Gallery support programs for NOCCA students, faculty, and the community.

ABOUT MIRO HOFFMANN
Miro Hoffmann’s light paintings combine his interests in light, painting, film, sculpture, and architecture. Moving away from the theatricality of cinema towards an act of seeing into a three dimensional and interactive experience that engages with the materiality of film and the experience of light, his film loop installations are drawings through space, projections of abstract paintings, minimal gestures encompassing the physical into navigating through light, space, and shadows. The artist’s work in film and painting can be seen on his website MiroHoffmann.com.

Miro Hoffmann is an alum of New Orleans Center for Creative Arts who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Musuem of Fine Arts in Boston. He is currently an artist in residence at the Joan Mitchell Center.

ABOUT JACOB REPTILE
NOCCA alum Jacob Reptile studied fiber art at the Kansas City Art Institute, and after graduating, he learned this papier-mâché technique while working on the set of Fantastic Mr. Fox at the Contempory Arts Center in 2009. He has taught this same workshop to the Krewe of Joan of Arc and the Krewe of Crustacious Desire (a sub Krewe of Delusion) and at 5 Press Gallery last Carnival season.

Interested in a Mardi Gras mask making class for ladies. We usually meet on a weekday night, but we could probably do a Saturday class. I am thinking of something that we could accomplish in a few hours. We have about twenty five to thirty ladies who usually attend our meetings. Could someone please contact me at my e-mail address?
