NOCCA Stage Company brings two exciting works to life this June: the beloved To Kill a Mockingbird (adapted by Christopher Sergel from Harper Lee’s groundbreaking novel) and the rare, exquisite, relatively recent musical, Violet, with music by Jeanine Tesori and libretto by Brian Crawley. The plays will run in repertory format throughout the month of June, with each play performed on two of the four weekends. (Full schedule below.)

To Kill a Mockingbird began 50 years ago as a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and was quickly translated into an acclaimed, Academy Award-winning movie. Strangely, it didn’t appear in stage-ready form until 1990, but since then, the show has received countless productions. Fans of the novel and the film will immediately recognize the familiar characters and plot, and the pitch-perfect themes of equality, integrity, courage, and compassion.

Violet is a beautiful musical, but in its 13 years, it has received only a handful of performances. The show initially opened Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons on March 11, 1997, and closed less than a month later, on April 6. However, it won both the Drama Critics’ Circle Award and Lucille Lortel Award for best musical. The show tells the story of young Violet Karl, who was accidentally disfigured by her father’s axe blade at 13, leaving a long facial scar. At 25, Violet travels from her home in North Carolina to Tulsa, Oklahoma to see if her favorite televangelist can remove the scar. The musical chronicles her journey — both emotionally and physically — toward a new life. NOCCA Stage Company’s production offers New Orleans audiences the rare chance to see this story played out on stage.

About NOCCA Stage Company

NOCCA Stage Company was begun in the summer of 2009 by faculty in the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts’ Drama division. NOCCA Stage Company offers a contemporary take on American classic plays by authors ranging from Arthur Miller, Kaufman & Hart, Rodgers & Hammerstein, to Mamet, Shepard, Kushner, and Sondheim.

NOCCA Stage Company’s purpose is two-fold: (1) to offer NOCCA students the chance to work side-by-side with theatre professionals on live productions through artist-apprentice mentorship; and, (2) to offer audiences the chance to see classic American Theatre, not as period pieces, but in a way that reflects today’s realities.
