The NOCCA Institute and NOCCA’s Visual Arts department are gearing up for the next event in the 2013-14 “On the Edge” gallery series: a solo exhibition called “fieldnotes”, featuring the work of India Flint. fieldnotes will open with a reception in the Ken Kirschman Artspace on Tuesday, March 11, from 6pm to 8pm, and the exhibition will remain on view until Friday, April 25.
The Kirschman Artspace sits at the heart of the NOCCA campus, located at 2800 Chartres Street in New Orleans. Gallery hours are 9am – 1pm Monday through Friday and 12pm – 4pm on Saturdays. Admission to the gallery and the opening reception is free, and the public is encouraged to attend.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
India Flint uses ecologically sustainable contact printing methods to color paper, bone, stone, and cloth. She works with leaves, flowers, bark, water, minerals — the discarded artifacts and hard detritus of human habitation and the local weed burden. She stitches and dyes dresses, wallworks, and sometimes costumes for dance. Her work has been described as using the earth as the printing plate and time as the press, conflating the visual and written poetics of place and memory; immersing herself in and paying deep attention to the environment, gathering thought and experience, imagery, and marks.
Each day, India begins her work with a walk. fieldnotes is a collection of works that map wanderings, note memories, and record experiences of place.
BIOGRAPHY
India Flint (b. 1958 Melbourne, Australia) holds a Master of Visual Arts from University of South Australia. Her work has been shown in exhibitions, performances, and permanent collections worldwide. Flint’s previous excursions to New Orleans include an exhibition, ‘muddy waters’ at NOCCA’s Riverview gallery in 2012 and a visit and artist talk at the Joan Mitchell Center in 2013.
