The NOCCA Institute, the New Orleans Bar Association, the Plessy & Ferguson Foundation, Students at the Center, United Teachers for New Orleans, and Beecher Memorial United Church of Christ are proud to offer a daylong selection of events to commemorate Plessy Day 2014, on Saturday, June 7. Each year, Plessy Day commemorates the long struggle for civil rights in Louisiana, celebrates our progress, and creates intergenerational conversations on race, class and equity.
All events are free of charge and open to the public.
10:00am-11:30am: NOCCA (2800 Chartres Street)
Join us for a reading and conversation led by young leaders in New Orleans. Ten young artists from Students at the Center will use works from the second edition of their book,The Long Ride, to explore issues of justice, equity, and civil rights in post-Katrina education in New Orleans. A selection of NOCCA’s Academic Studio students will tackle a question of interest to many parents and educators: how to talk to young people about race.
10:00am-1:00pm: NOCCA (2800 Chartres Street)
The New Orleans Bar Association’s Minorities in the Profession Committee, in conjunction with the Young Lawyers Section, will host a legal fair on NOCCA’s campus. Lawyers will be on hand to consult with members of the community on a variety of legal issues including but not limited to landlord-tenant issues, successions, formation of legal entities, property titles, criminal law, family law, and intellectual property matters.
11:30am-1:00pm: Press and Royal Streets
The NOCCA Institute will host a community meal at the site of Homer Plessy’s 1892 arrest. Guests will enjoy a fresh, healthy lunch, featuring music by the Plessy & Ferguson Band led by Carl LeBlanc.
5:00pm-7:00pm: Beecher Memorial United Church of Christ (1914 N. Miro Street)
The Plessy & Ferguson Foundation welcomes guests for an event entitled “Where Are We Now?”. Members of the Beecher Church, along with the Plessy & Ferguson Foundation, will look at the history of the Valena C. Jones School and announce plans for an historic state marker at the site. Jones School alumnus and artist Keith Plessy will present the story of his civil rights murals in the school. The event will also feature a panel moderated by Dr. Raynard Sanders that will discuss the recently filed civil rights complaint against the Recovery School District to stop school closings. Light fare will be provided by Marriott New Orleans.
8:00pm-10:00pm: Press and Royal Streets
Join us again at the historic site of Plessy’s 1892 arrest for a screening of the documentary Faubourg Treme: The Untold Story of Black New Orleans, by Dawn Logsdon and Lolis Eric Elie. BYO chairs, blankets, and other picnic accouterments. The Boxcar food truck will be on hand, selling its regular tasty fare.
